  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University has a unique opportunity to host two statewide high school basketball tournaments this spring – a benefit to the city and the university.

    The South Dakota Girls State B Basketball Tournament will be held in NSU’s Barnett Center March 8-10, and the State B Boys Tournament will be held there March 15-17. While the boys’ tournament is held at NSU every year, the girls’ tournament is not typically held at Northern.   • ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State University School of Fine Arts’ Annual Juried Student Exhibition will be on display in the NSU Student Center Gallery Feb. 26-March 16.

    This year’s exhibition features 23 pieces of art from 17 different NSU student artists.

    A closing reception for the exhibition will be held on Tuesday, March 13 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the NSU Student Center Gallery. Guest juror, Ryan Stander, will be present to announce the awards of the exhibition. This reception is free and open to the public.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. -  Northern State University senior Zack North of Huron will present research at the State Capitol in Pierre on Feb. 26.

    North was chosen to represent Northern State University and will present his own research project, titled “Public History in Action: Preserving the Story of NSU Fine Arts,” to the greater legislative community.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Three Northern State University jazz ensembles will offer an evening of “Sweet Jazz” at 7:30 p.m. March 1 in the NSU Johnson Fine Arts Center’s Harvey and Cynthia Jewett Theater.

    Ensembles performing on the concert include the 2 O’Clock Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Grant Manhart, NSU professor of music; Vocal Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Wendy van Gent, NSU associate professor of music; and the NSU Jazz Combo, directed by Mr. Fred Hemke, NSU assistant professor of music.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State University School of Fine Arts Opera Workshop will present “A Hand of Bridge” by Samuel Barber and “Gallantry” by Douglas Moore, March 15-16 at 7:30 p.m. in the NSU Krikac Auditorium.

    In Barber’s “A Hand of Bridge,” we find two couples gathering for an ordinary game of cards and the expected social interaction of a pair of pampered housewives and their distracted husbands.   • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Dr. Steven Usitalo of the Northern State University College of Arts and Sciences will attend national and international conferences on the topic of genocide in Omaha, Neb., and Paris, France, this semester.

    Usitalo, professor of history, will attend an educational forum titled “Vectors of Violence: Persecution and Complacency in Nazi Germany and the Great Plains,” at the University of Nebraska-Omaha March 27-28.   • ABERDEEN, S.D. – This spring at Northern State University, “A Writer Reads” will feature readings by three visiting writers, as well as a capstone reading by students taking fiction writing.

    Visiting writers will speak to English majors in the classroom and also give public readings of their work. Each reading will take place in the Williams Library Round Room from 4 to 4:45 p.m.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – A husband and wife musical duo will perform an upcoming concert at Northern State University.

    Dr. Kenneth Boulton and JoAnne Barry will present a recital of music for piano four-hands at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, in NSU’s Krikac Auditorium. Joining them for one of the selections will be NSU faculty members Dr. Darci Bultema, associate professor of voice, and Mr. Michael Skyles, instructor of voice.
