Real World Research Opportunities

classes are designed to closely mimic the experience of a research laboratory, providing students with the opportunity to engage in more advanced, hands-on learning. In these courses, students go beyond traditional demonstrations and experiments, taking on more responsibility and autonomy in their work. Moreover, students undertake independent research projects, which encourages them to explore novel topics, design their own experiments, and troubleshoot problems as they arise. Unlike introductory labs, where experiments are often predetermined, upper-division courses allow students to take ownership of their projects, fostering creativity, problem-solving skills, and a deeper understanding of experimental design. Our students gain practical, hands-on experience with a range of modern instrumentation and analytical techniques. From spectrometers and chromatography systems to advanced reaction set-ups, students learn how to properly operate and troubleshoot equipment that is commonly used in research and industry. This exposure ensures that students are familiar with cutting-edge tools and techniques, making them well-prepared for careers in research, industry, or graduate studies.

Advanced Instrumentation to Support Learning

Northern State University distinguishes itself among small primarily undergraduate institutions by providing access to an exceptional array of advanced instrumentation within our esteemed Chemistry Department. Our well-equipped facility boasts an impressive arsenal of cutting-edge equipment, including:

  • Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES)
  • Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR)
  • Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR)
  • Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)
  • Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA)
  • Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy (UV-Vis)
  • Powder X-ray Diffraction (PXRD)
  • High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
  • Gas Chromatography (GC)
